Adam and Adam / Eve and Eve – 2014 art prints by Nancy Fouts
A set of prints on hardboard after American-born London based artist Nancy Fouts (1945-2019).
Fouts’ 2014 works ‘Adam and Adam’ and ‘Eve and Eve’ are a wonderful, playful take on Lucas Cranach’s 1528 paintings of Adam and Eve.
Not copied but closely imitated in style, even down to the craquelure in the finish, these celebrations of homosexual love sit well amongst the artist’s several works taking a sly and light-hearted look on religion, alongside her joyous other works, mostly ‘ready made’ common objects reconfigured and re-contextualised to give them new meaning, often surrealistic, and with humour.
Nancy Fouts studied at the Royal College of Art and worked in advertising in the 60s and 70s when she also produced album covers for bands including Manfred Mann and Steeleye Span. Later she opened an artist run gallery in London, Fouts and Fowler, and she exhibited all over the world including work in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
On hardboard, they stand alone leant from a surface as pictured, but would also look fantastic in frames like the originals.
The bottoms are not all cut at a perfect right angle. The adjoined pair of Eve and Eve has some scratches to the centre. Please see the photos and zoom in on a laptop for clarity.
At the time of listing there are
• 2 x large Eve pairs
• 1 x large Adam pair
• 1 x adjoined Eve & Eve
• 2 x small Adam pairs
• 2 x small Eve pairs
The large versions measure 61cm X 22.5cm, the smaller 33.5cm X 14cm.
