Early 1900s brass and iron dinner gong with bells and original beater
A wonderful antique brass dinner gong on an ornate iron frame, with an oak base with additional bread bells, complete with original wood and felt beater.
This particularly rare example of the form also has four bells of different sizes atop the frame, perhaps for the butler to ring the different pitches to request different services from the various servants in the house. Perhaps a run along all four bells announced in a grand way ending in a klang of the gong a particularly extravagant dinner.
This is great for the kitchen or hallway to gather family or guests. It wouldn’t necessarily be heard throughout Downton Abbey, but if you’re unfortunate enough not to live in a grand country estate or manor house, the modest size of this gong should suffice.
The bun feet are made from brass, but the missing back right has been given a colour-matched wooden foot. You’d have to have it upside-down and studying it to notice.
A fantastic and impressive ornamental antique in or out of use.
