Vintage handpainted Jazz Bands lawn sign

A fantastic decades old handpainted sign by the resident sign writer of Coney Island fairground, Porthcawl, South Wales, which recently closed after 107 years.

Advertising the location of where the jazz band played on a directional sign mounted on a pointed length of wood, likely to have been made to stick into the ground.

Remember a time when jazz bands would be playing at a funfair? Not for a few years. This particular fairground hosted competitions for marching jazz bands in the 1970s and 80s.

A great collector’s example of the dying art of sign writing, all done freehand, with just pencil guide lines.

The fair at Porthcawl named after the original Coney Island funfair in New York was opened in 1918, just at the end of the first world war to give some distraction and comfort to returning soldiers.

They had a permanently employed dedicated sign writer for many decades, known in true Welsh style as John Art.

Look out for several more of his pieces to be listed in the coming days and weeks, or use the contact form to enquire about the others in advance.

It measures 58cm wide X 15.5cm tall. The stick is 61cm tall.
