An engaging and atmospheric unsigned early 1900s oil on board portrait of a man smoking a pipe.

Dating from around the beginning of the last century, this evocative image shows an old bearded man in a hat, lighting his pipe, the flame lighting up his face with a glow in the dark.

This original vintage oil painting on board is in a period carved dark wooden frame. The frame has its original glass which shows waves due to the handblown manner in which it wouldn’t been produced. It also has its original wooden panel backing which is carved to a taper where it is joined to the frame with original pins. The frame has plenty of signs of woodworm which has been treated. It suits the age and style of the image perfectly.

This painting was done on the reverse of what appears to be poster for a performance about a Lady Leighton. This is still intact behind the wooden boards. See picture.
