Original oil on canvas painting of ‘Tete de Clown’ after Bernard Buffet
A striking iteration of a clown signed by its highly accomplished artist, Henry Wynn 1970, after the much lauded 20th century French artist Bernard Buffet’s in his heavily outlined, bold and inimitable Expressionist style.
The original that this fantastic painting was inspired by was ‘Tete de Clown’ (1955). It picks up on the artist’s spiky, geometric style and is a fantastic homage, while not being an identical copy.
Something very engaging about the dichotomy between the joy associated with clowns and the melancholy beneath the surface.
It is in a lovely oak frame in fantastic condition, with a wire to the reverse for hanging.
Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) was born and lived in Paris, the city which became one of his principal recurring subjects, as well as figurative work including a series of clowns from the 1950s.
Buffet, like so many artists, lived an interesting life. He grew up in Paris and studied at its esteemed École Nationale Supéreure des Beaux-Arts and was given his first retrospective exhibition aged 30. He went on to exhibit all over the world and his works are carried by great institutions world over such as the Tate Gallery in London. He won the legion d’honneur, one of France’s highest honours, and during the present decade is becoming a very sought after artist.
