New Zealand Ponga wood vase
An interestingly textured bud vase of attractive curvilinear form, featuring a large naturally occurring gap in the body.
The vase is made from a black tree fern native of New Zealand, by the Māori people to whom it is known as Ponga (or Mamaku). Turning ponga logs on a lathe to create decorative folk-art pieces like vases and pots has become a tradition over the decades.
Being neither hard nor softwood but belonging to a separate category, the unique bobbly texture and crater in one side where another branch once protruded make this an unusual and compelling piece.
