Mid-late 19th Century powder blue water jug with pewter lid by H Hall of Hanley

Mid-late 19th Century powder blue water jug with pewter lid by H Hall of Hanley, Staffordshire.

A wonderfully unique and ornamented powder blue mid-late 19th century water jug.

With a pale blue textured body and a pewter lid which has a little of the Art Nouveau in its undulating, sinuous form, which might suggest later in the 19th century as a date of production, though these jugs are known to date at least as far as the middle of the century.

The piece is stamped with the name of its maker, H Hall of Hanley in Staffordshire, home of the greatest potteries in England.

There are lovely details all over, from the beaded pattern, the splayed figure where the handles join the body, and the matte pewter lid and its fluted little handle.

There are some stains which don’t easily wash out with soap which may have been engrained for many decades, but these are really only noticed on very close inspection.

Measures 21cm tall and 11cm in diameter.

A lovely, rare piece.
