Late 19th century Cornelius Vincent Smith of London mahogany swivel chair

A very special late 19th century, circa 1880, mahogany swivel chair with ball end arms and sunburst carved frieze.

***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***

The maker of the chair, Cornelius Vincent Smith was first listed in The Furniture Gazette in 1891 as, “the well known upholsterering manufacturer and art furniture maker, [who] in person is of middle height. He is a thorough man of business, and has a very pleasant manner.” He was especially well known for his chairs. He had workshops in North West London at Osnaburgh Street and later at Hampstead Road.

With several elements of interest, from the rich, warm colour of the antique mahogany, the Arts and Crafts influences in the carving, the sloped curvaceous splayed legs and sparce four upright back design.

The high back makes the chair very comfortable, in combination with the professionally reupholstered seat.

Made with a beautiful piece of traditional dark ‘office’ green leather, given new webbing and stuffing for complete comfort, and with the original studs dutifully reused to finish.

Overall in excellent condition all round, with just a very few small knocks visible here and there. Please zoom into the photos to verify.

61cm wide to the outer edges of the arms, 48cm deep seat. The seat height is 42cm and the overall height of the chair to the top of the back is 83cm.

***Due to the size and weight of the cabinet it will be sent by the courier from Cardiff. You may also of course collect it or arrange a courier yourself.
