Late 19th century Cornelius Vincent Smith of London mahogany swivel chair

A very special late 19th century, circa 1880, mahogany swivel chair with ball end arms and sunburst carved frieze.

***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***

The maker of the chair, Cornelius Vincent Smith was first listed in The Furniture Gazette in 1891 as, “the well known upholsterering manufacturer and art furniture maker, [who] in person is of middle height. He is a thorough man of business, and has a very pleasant manner.” He was especially well known for his chairs. He had workshops in North West London at Osnaburgh Street and later at Hampstead Road.

With several elements of interest, from the rich, warm colour of the antique mahogany, the Arts and Crafts influences in the carving, the sloped curvaceous splayed legs and sparce four upright back design.

The high back makes the chair very comfortable, in combination with the professionally reupholstered seat.

Made with a beautiful piece of traditional dark ‘office’ green leather, given new webbing and stuffing for complete comfort, and with the original studs dutifully reused to finish.

Overall in excellent condition all round, with just a very few small knocks visible here and there. Please zoom into the photos to verify.

61cm wide to the outer edges of the arms, 48cm deep seat. The seat height is 42cm and the overall height of the chair to the top of the back is 83cm.

***Due to the size and weight of the cabinet it will be sent by the courier from Cardiff. You may also of course collect it or arrange a courier yourself. Shipping by courier arranged by us is to be paid by the buyer directly to the courier on delivery. A price will be arranged by us in advance with a courier we have used many times and agreed with the buyer before confirmation. This cost will be very reasonable as the regular courier gets a lot of work from us. Buyer’s contact details will be passed to the courier with their permission in order to arrange a suitable delivery day and time.***

Lovely vintage shop with outstanding customer service!! When I fall in love with this Victorian table I was not in the position to receive the delivery right away due to house move. Tim kindly agreed to store it for me until I was ready. Cannot recommend it enough!!! Thank you for my lovely addition to my home.

I absolutely love this site. Last year I bought a dansette record player and recently bought a vintage butterfly table. The delivery was very quick and very well packed so no chance of breakages. Both items were exactly as described and as in the pictures. If you want anything vintage or a bit different this is the place to shop and every item comes with a personal note.I will be using this site for many years to come. Thank you Tim for giving me so much pleasure with my purchases. X

Lovely vintage biscuit barrel in great condition. Solid, clean, and handy for storing the little bits and pieces that usually clutter up my bedside table. A bargain at the price, and delivery was super quick.

Found a wonderful cabinet via Etsy and was signposted to the Oaky Doke Vintage Home website for the best price! Very impressed with the excellent customer service, attention to detail and care shown by Tim, who helped arrange a courier with a very reasonable price for me, coming all of the way to Scotland! Communication throughout excellent. Delighted with the quality of the cabinet, it's unusual aesthetic and multi-function use. Just perfect for helping solve the storage issues in our wee flat! A very happy customer and would highly recommend Tim's vintage business. I'll certainly be browsing the website in future for future finds. Thanks so much Tim!

Fantastic! The phone we purchased circa 1930s is the perfect addition to our recent home purchase that was built in the 30s! The home came with a place where phones like these would have been and it looks great! Tim, thanks for a wonderful purchasing experience and I’m sure I will be back to find my next vintage item!
