Excellent 1938 Imperial ‘The Good Companion’ Typewriter, made in England, fully functional, with new ribbon and original hard case
An excellent midcentury British Imperial typewriter produced in Leicester, England in 1938.
This is the first ‘Good Companion’ model, of several made in an evolution of designs over the decades. It is a 1930s designed model, and is one of the best looking gloss black versions, and the quintessential round glass keys of machines from the period.
Probably the most renowned British maker of typewriters, this machine feels great to type on, producing a clear typeface, on the larger scale.
It has the iconic upward facing curved carriage return lever and unique chassis shape and so looks fantastic as well as typing very well.
It has been thoroughly cleaned, its joints and carriage tracks oiled, key tops individually cleaned with glass cleaner, and type bars individually cleaned with a thorough process with different materials to ensure smooth operation. Finally it has been given a brand new black and red ribbon, and arrives at your doorstep safely packed and ready to type.
It has the royal warrant on the front right of the chassis for King George VI.
The base seen in some photos doubles as the base of the case and can be removed with the screws to use directly on the table top if preferred. Three original chassis cleaning cloth and type slug cleaning brush are still present, clipped into the case.
Measures approximately 28cm² X 10cm tall.
I have written a guide to using typewriters for those not so familiar with them:
