The Elm seats on these chairs would have been made by specialists who just carved chair seats with a type of axe called an adze (great word for Scrabble), before being passed on to the carpenter who set it into the rest of the chair.
With an elegantly simple piercing to the back splat, spindles below both upper and lower bow, iron rods supporting the arms, turned baluster legs and H stretcher beneath.
My favourite aspect of this example is the original condition, it has retained all its patina from perhaps 200 years of use. It looks like it may have spent a period by a fire with the attraction of soot evident in some areas.
The areas which have been sat on, leant on or rubbed against whilst the sitters got in or out of the chair are deeply contrasting, having been worn to a much lighter shade. This really enriches the piece and shows the depth of its history.
It’s easy not to notice but one of the spindles beneath the left arm is missing, lost at some point in its long history. And that there is an old screw in the turned upright also beneath the left arm. This could be to close a crack in it. The part, and the entire chair is sturdy with all joints firm.
This chair is fantastic in the lounge or a corner of a bedroom. It will also work well dining room, reading nook or conservatory, or perhaps best of all, by the fireside.
Measures 87cm tall X 58.5cm at widest to the outsides of the arms. The seat is 39cm in height at the front X 37cm wide X 37cm deep and the overall depth of the chair including the legs is 49cm.
