Collection of five mid 20th century African masks

An amazing collection of five African carved wooden ceremonial masks.

Each with their own striking features, from the paintwork, textures, exaggerated features, ornamentation and face shapes, they look more or less human to varying degrees.

Joyful, beautiful, captivating, these 5 have been collected by myself from different sources for their individual qualities.

Unlike many masks which find their way to Europe, these are genuine articles, not souvenirs made for the tourist.

In order of photos:

Round Eket ethnic group mask from Nigeria. Symbolising the Sun. Traditional masks relating to nature are related to cyclical phenomena. This mask is used for dances at the end of the agricultural period. 26.5 wide X 27cm tall X 6cm deep.

Crebo or Baule Goli mask from Ivory Coast. 43.5cm tall X 21cm wide X 4cm deep.

Ibo ethnic group mask from Nigeria. Used in initiation ceremonies. 29cm tall X 19cm wide X 15cm deep.

Eket ethnic group mask from Nigeria. Used in initiation ceremonies. 34cm tall X 21cm wide X 11cm deep.

Songye mask from the Congo. 30cm tall X 16cm wide X 11cm deep.

These masks are all several decades old, coming from Aaron’s the middle off the last century, and some have a lovely patina they’ve picked up over the decades.

An impressive collection to add to your own or fill a wall with mesmerising traditional vintage handmade pieces of folk art.

I have considered selling them separately but for the time being will only sell them as a complete collection of five.
