Antique Mahogany cash till with ringing bell, by George H. Gledhill & Sons Ltd
A fascinating, working late Victorian relic, the Gledhill & Sons Patent Automatic Cash Till.
Invented in the late 1880s, George Gledhill is credited with inventing the cash register, which would print on paper the amount paid, while making a great clear chime of the bell located at the back of the interior.
The original usage instructions for use are displayed on the underside of the lid.
The mechanics inside are all on display, and there are glass and brass elements, labels marked Gold and Silver for the two scooped coin trays in the drawer, in addition to the original makers badge to the reverse, reading, ‘G.H. Gledhill & Sons Ltd patentees Trinity Works Halifax’. A serial number is also present, see photo.
Gledhill invented this successful machine alongside numerous mechanical devices used in the RAF and the military during WWWI. Later he invented the Time Recorder for use in workplaces.
Pull the beautifully ornate brass cupped handle and the drawer pulls out and the bell rings. The front half gives access to the cash compartments, while the back of the chassis holds the mechanics.
I have waxed and polished the till, but deliberately not attempted to restore away the marks of use it has garnered over its years of service.
Interesting as a piece of our history, but also very usable as a till, perhaps for an independent trader or market stall holder.
Measures 48cm deep X 22cm wide X 19.5cm tall.
See and hear it in action!
