Late 19th century Mambila tribe Ceremonial Terracotta Mask

A joyful and unusual late 19th century African terracotta ceremonial mask.

With striking features, from the large vivid cheeks, elongated nose with large flared nostrils and ring shape ears.

It is made from terracotta and coloured in different shades.

Having contacted a UK based African born expert on tribal masks who has written books about them, I have learnt that this was created and used by the Mambila tribe, based across Nigeria and Cameroon in the late 19th century. It would have been used in initiation ceremonies in which the whole tribe dances in the round.

An impressive collectors piece and fantastic as a piece of unusual but eye catching sculpture.

Measures approximately 24cm tall X 23cm wide (ear to ear) X 18cm deep.
