19th century hardback book ‘Flower Painting for Beginners’ by Ethel Nisbet

A delightful collectable hardback book of ‘Flower Painting for Beginners’ which features ’12 Studies from nature’, which are removable plates but all still present. The book is by Ethel Nisbet and appeared as part of Vere Foster’s Water-Colour Series, first published in 1894.

While this edition is not dated, it is assumed to be first edition. From the note glued into the front cover (pictured) we see that this copy was awarded to Gweno Lloyd in 1912 for ‘success in watercolour drawing’.

The cover is a beautiful thing in itself, with Art Nouveau text and floral illustration style in vogue at the time.

This would make a wonderful gift to a lover of flowers and/or painting, and the removable coloured flower prints could be cut out and framed as wall décor.

The book is in excellent condition for its age inside and out, with just a few minor creases to the exterior as visible in photos. One of the flower prints is loose and a previous owner has drawn a scene in pencil on the page behind it.

The book measures 24cm x 19cm. 75pp
