19th century Windsor rocking chair of Ash and Elm, with crinoline stretcher
A wonderful hand carved and constructed Ash and Elm wood Windsor rocking chair, believed to be from the mid – late 19th century.
Adding antique charm, history and sculptural beauty to your home, whilst also being a comfortable and useful piece of furniture.
***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***
The back and legs are made of Beech wood, and the seat an absolutely beautiful solid Elm, a hardwood with a glorious wide grain.
The Elm seats on these chairs would have been made by specialists who just carved chair seats with a type of axe called an adze (great word for Scrabble), before being passed on to the carpenter who set it into the rest of the chair. The border line around the edge of the seat is a lovely detail.
The ‘saddle’ to this seat is deep, which adds to the comfort. You can see the handcraft in the bow (the main, steam bent curved back piece) and in the sticks, which are not turned but carved and charmingly uneven in their profile. The sticks (not spindles as they have no swelling), fanning in each direction above a beautiful seat, and turned baluster legs.
The supporting structure beneath is of the most desirable type, the attractive, curved crinoline stretcher, so-called as it resembles the shape of the ‘crinoline’ structured petticoats of the Victorian period.
The shape of the arms is interesting, slight in form and pointed rather than in a soft curve. Each maker put their own spin on this classic Windsor style. You can see in the tops of the arms where the lower spindles are held in round holes in the arms, the joint tightened then with an additional wedge malleted into the spindle from above, known as wedged tenon joints.
It is quite rare to see a Windsor rocker, but they started to come in to fashion in England around the middle of the 19th century, though earlier in America.
This chair is fantastic in the lounge or a corner of a bedroom. Also nice to have in a larger kitchen (rocking gently away while your partner cooks the dinner…) dining room, reading nook or conservatory.
There is some damage to the front of the right leg, as pictured.
Measures 99cm tall X 55cm at widest to the outsides of the arms. The seat is 40cm in height at the front X 40cm wide X 42cm deep and the overall depth of the chair including the legs is 75cm.
***Due to the size of the chair it will be sent by courier from Cardiff. You may also of course collect it, or arrange a courier yourself.
