c.1680s heavily carved coffer chest
A beautifully and almost completely carved Oak coffer dating from circa the 1680s.

All the charm of the handicraft of the carver is on display, no line completely straight or perfectly curved. The panels and the rails and uprights all adorned with attractive repeating roundels, bumps, chip-carved slots and routed channels.
The timber is entirely Oak, as would be expected of furniture of this era, and it carries the dark patina of four centuries of life.
Originally an important piece in the home, as a status symbol when well carved like this example, coffers had locks (this one hasn’t survived the 350 years) and all the homes valuables would’ve been stored in it.
Plenty of storage on a relatively compact footprint with a lid which hinges on two interlocked iron hoops.
There are signs of age of course in this antique coffer. There is a hole in the base and two cracks, though the base is stable. There was looseness in the jointed top which along with the whole carcass has had a good session at the furniture restorer, who has firmly secured all joints. At some point in its long life it has been reduced in height at the legs. Often with very old pieces such as this, wet floors from cleaning make the feet of furniture rot and so they are periodically cut down to be sure all the structure remains stable.
This piece aches with history and character and as well as looking stunning will hold a huge quantity of blankets, sheets, bedding, shoes, games or whatever else you need accessible but don’t need to be in sight.
Measures 112cm wide X 49cm deep X 70cm tall to the lid. The body is 105cm wide X 45cm deep.
