c.18th century Welsh rushlight candlestick holder

A wonderful wrought iron c.18th century blacksmith-made candle and Rush light holder.

Rush lights were lengths of rush which were dipped in tallow and lit to make a light source. Pushing one side of the clamp which returns with gravity to choose against the other side, this simple clamp works with gravity to hold onto the rush.

This example also has a conical candle holder so you may choose which kind of light you need. The rush lights were completely natural and relatively easy to find, whereas the candle holder whose candles with their price tag and brighter, consistent light source would’ve been reserved for special occasions.

With twisted wrought iron uprights, splayed feet, conical candle sconce, and turned in detail to the tip of the nip, this is a beautiful and elegant handmade blacksmith piece, in or out of use.

21.5 cm tall X 15cm diameter at feet.
