19th century bow back light Elm and Ash Windsor chair by George Wilson of Grantham

The sticks and legs are made of the traditional Ash and the seat is an absolutely beautiful solid Elm, a hardwood with a glorious wide grain, this example with lovely figuring in the centre with a knot.

The gently shaped Elm seats on the chair would have been carved with a special type of axe called an adze (great word for Scrabble), and the steam-bent hoop back slightly asymmetric. It is likely the first stick on the left of the back is a replacement made at some point over the chair’s ~150+ year history.

You can see the handcraft in the bow (the main, steam bent curved back piece) and in the sticks, which are not turned but carved and charmingly very slightly uneven in their profile. Beneath the seat are spindles forming an H stretcher between turned baluster legs.

Of great quality, this chair was made by George Wilson senior or junior, potentially both, who were based in Grantham in Lincolnshire in the north east of England. Their reputations flourished between 1841-1892 when they were just active, dating this chair with some certainty to this period.

The stamp is visible to the side of the seat shown in the relevant photo. Other examples were signed G. Wilson Grantham, so the original G has since worn away.

This comfortable and attractive chair is fantastic in the lounge or a corner of a bedroom. Also great in a dining room, reading nook or conservatory.

Measures 62.5cm tall at the back X 51cm at widest to the outsides of the arms. The seat is 38cm in height at the front X 46cm wide X 37cm deep and the maximum depth of the chair is 42cm.
