Antique 18th Century Provincial Coffer Chest

A charming antique French provincial coffer or blanket chest.

Large in scale with a hinged lid and wrought iron handmade latch and closure, hinges and nails.

There is a wonderful little curl to the end of the latch and no piece of hand crafted ironwork is in a perfectly straight line, giving this piece plenty of rustic character.

The timber is of pine but much darkened over the centuries than as we typically think of pine. It is all hand sawn.

There is lots of patina, variated wear and spotting to the surfaces.

There are patches of woodwork damage which has not affected the structural integrity whatsoever and has been given three treatments of anti woodworm to make sure it is no longer active.

This piece aches with history and character and was probably made by very local tradesmen as a practical piece of domestic furniture in rural France. It will hold a huge quantity of blankets, sheets, bedding, shoes, games or whatever else you need accessible but don’t need to be in sight.

Measures 123cm wide X 57cm deep X 65cm tall.
