18th Century chip carved coffer

An 18th century chip carved four panel oak coffer with a two plank top.

Large in scale with wrought iron hinges to the lid.

All the charm of the handicraft of the carver is on display, no line or cut completely uniform. The rails and uprights are all adorned with a repeating chip carved pattern.

The timber is entirely Oak, as would be expected of furniture of this era, and it carries the dark and patina of three centuries of life, the top has wonderful variations of tone from centuries of wear.

The long strap blacksmith-made iron hinges are typical of these early coffers. The lid is made up of just two wide oak planks. The back one is perhaps warped and curves down towards the back. The large dome headed nails to the top are an irregular shape having been handmade by blacksmith.

Originally an important piece in the home, as a status symbol like this example, coffers had locks (though the one on this has gone at some point) and all the homes valuables would’ve been stored in it.

There are signs of age of course in this antique coffer. A common issue with these centuries old coffers is woodworm to the legs, and the back right leg has come under attack at some point in its history (see photo). Though reduced in size compared to the others, the leg is stable. All of the legs have been given woodworm killer treatment to be completely sure there’s nothing remaining.

This piece aches with history and character and as well as looking great will hold a huge quantity of blankets, sheets, bedding, shoes, games or whatever else you need accessible but don’t need to be in sight.
