Pair of late 18th century Fencing positions illustrations, framed

Engraved by William Grainger (b. circa 1750, d.?) in the late 1700s, this wonderful pair of ‘Offensive and Defensive Positions’ illustrations originate from the Halls Encyclopedia published by London publisher and bookseller C. Cooke of 17 Paternoster Row, by St. Paul’s Cathedral in central London.

These are believed to be genuine pages from the 18th century encyclopedia.

The illustrations of gentlemen in their finery are wonderfully depicted in a great array of technical poses with descriptions such as, ‘The plain cut over Point from Corte in Tierce’.

They make fascinating and visually compelling display pieces whether or not one has an intimate knowledge of the centuries old sport.

They have been newly professionally mounted and framed to match in matte black wood and glazed. They are strung and ready to hang.

Overall the pages are in very good condition, though one has a tear from the bottom centre to a little way up. One has faded a little more than the other.

The frames both measure 45cm X 32.5cm.
