Huge West Country farmhouse dairy bowl, c. late 19th century

An antique terracotta dairy bowl, likely from a large farmhouse or estate, of striking proportions.

Originating from the West Country, this example has an attractive dry finish to the exterior with white streaking and patination to the stone, and a semi-glazed interior in order that it be non-porous.

It would have had many uses in the kitchen including principally skimming cream which rises to the top of the milk for taking off to be churned into butter. These were also used as mixing bowls or for proving dough for bread.

Beyond its original use, these work beautifully now as fruit bowls, planters or decorative pieces, covered in unique markings from its hand fabrication and years of use and collecting marks.

Make no mistake, this is a huge example, measuring close to two feet across the top.

55cm diameter across the top X 28.5cm tall.
