Georgian oak bureau c.1760 with 5 drawers, antique 18th century fall front desk

A beautiful richly warm toned antique Georgian 18th century oak bureau.

***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***

Of solid wood from top to bottom, this characterful bureau consists of a fall front which rests on pull out lopers to form a desk, with a range of cubby holes and shelves for paperwork, stationery and other practical bits you need but don’t need on show. This fall front desk panel unusually still has its key, so it locks closed.

Beneath the desk are five drawers, two narrow and three full width. These all have typical Georgian ‘bat wing’ shaped brass pulls. The eagle eyed will notice one does not quite identically match the other seven. The unit sits on elegant, curved bracket feet.

Built around 1760, some decades later during the Victorian period, wooden knob handles were in vogue and holes were drilled for these in the drawer fronts and can be seen from inside the drawer. At the same time presumably, the escutcheons were changed to simpler round brass ones. The original brass pulls have since been returned to the drawers.

In case of any doubt, the light vertical-ish line down the piece in the photos is a crack of sunlight during the photographing of the bureau!

There are a few knocks the bureau has taken over the centuries as pieces of such antiquity usually see, including three small filled spots to the top, see grouped picture, and a repair to part of the fall front near the left side hinge. The tops of the sides of the bottom drawer have seen some loss to woodworm which is historic but has been given two rounds of treatment to be doubly sure.

Though an antique piece built in a very different age, the concept of a foldaway desk suits modern day working from home perfectly, with its ability to fit in a small space (this example is a very appealing sub- 3 foot in width) which may be used for several purposes. For example, it would work in the living room of a flat where a separate office or desk is impractical, or a bedroom in shared accommodation where the drawers beneath the desk could be used for clothes.

This antique cabinet has improved with age and patina, with each decade of use adding character to its story.

The chest measures 86.5cm wide X 102cm tall X 47cm deep.
