Beautiful gilt pier mirror c.1820s, mid-late Regency wall mirror

A beautiful mid-late Regency c.1820s gilt pier mirror by cabinet maker James Mein of Kelso, Scotland.

***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***

These pier mirrors were relatively tall and slim, designed to be placed between two large windows in grand salons.

This lovely example has a giltwood upper panel which is very elegantly carved without being ostentatiously elaborate. It will therefore suit a home which is contemporary and minimal as well as a historic one. There is also some subtle foliage carving to the centre of the uprights.

This splendid antique has its original plate of glass which has a little foxing, mostly along the right edge, and attractive dark freckling which shows its age without obliterating the reflection. There are a couple of other glitches to the mirror backing, shown in photos. These take nothing away from the piece whatsoever.

Crafted around 200 years ago by James Mein whose label is still present to the rear of the mirror, offered goods and services from carpets and rugs, to gilding and even undertaking.

There was some rubbing to the lower horizontal and outer sides from cleaning (do not use water on gilding – use meths if cleaning is necessary) which has been professionally restored with 20 carat gold leaf. The back paper was hanging off so has been replaced. Otherwise the mirror is entirely original, the gilding with a lovely natural wear, a little darker in corners, and a little duller than the bright gold it once would have been. The faded charm giving it such understated beauty.

Measures 93.5cm tall X 53cm wide X 10cm.
