Barbotine duck absinthe water jug, St Clement, France, 1950s
A fabulous French St Clements barbotine duck water jug, with the bird’s beak acting as the spout.
The St Clements faiencerie in the Lorraine in the north east of the country was founded by Jacques Chambrette in 1758, and barbotine (moulded slipware) pieces, including ducks were made there as far back at the 19th century. The form of the impressed mark here gates this canard to the 1950s.
Said to be for Absinthe, like Pastis which came a little later, Absinthe was mixed with water as a mixer before drinking.
A fun way of receiving your glass of water, from the bowels of a duck, this will also work nicely as a decorative jug on a shelf or amongst your house plants to water them when required.
