Bar-let model 2 mini portable typewriter in good working order, made in England in 1937
This unusually compact portable typewriter was made in Nottingham, England by Bar-let and is in fantastic working condition as well as being in remarkably good cosmetic condition for its 89 years of age with its iconic round keys and gleaming, dent, rust and scratch free chassis. It has been very well looked after.
It includes the original instruction leaflet which explains the purpose of every part of the typewriter. I have also fitted it with a brand new ribbon.
This machine was made in Nottingham in 1937. The 1925 date to the reverse refers to the company in the broader sense, the model 2 started production later and the serial number dates it to 1937.
This is a fantastic vintage typewriter with classic 30s design, which has been cleaned, oiled and given a brand new ribbon and is ready to write the next great novel, and will even print it for you as you go!
It prints solid, full characters, every one showing clearly. There is a little smudging to the special characters on the sample, partly due to it being a brand new ribbon. Much time was spent adjusting type slug contact height to get everything printing evenly.
In addition to the alphabet, the typewriter has a large range of special characters including a zero key which isn’t common with machines of this vintage. It also has a well-functioning back space, caps and caps lock, in addition to Tab for skipping forward several spaces at once, and margin release for finishing a word beyond the set margin.
The vertical carriage return lever simultaneously shifts the paper up as it is moved. There are also V shaped paper supports which fold down, and a paper release lever on the platen.
The wooden case is in good, solid condition – though with signs of wear – with a strong leather handle which is unusually, in one piece.
These are lovely machines to use, to collect and to use as décor in the home or office.
A beautiful and scarce piece of English office history in great condition.
The chassis measures 29cm deep X 20.5cm wide X 14cm at the tallest.
