Antique Stereoscope 3D image viewer c.1880s with 18 slides in vintage box
An antique late 1800s Stereoscope viewer with 18 viewing image slides from America and Great Britain in a vintage silk covered box.
These marvelous little contraptions for amusement are held beneath by the wooden handle and by peering through the lenses to the card held on the long nose-like platform. Because our eyes view from slightly different angles and each eye sees its own picture, it is as if the collective image we see is in three dimensions.
The image is placed between the wire holders and that platform can be slid forwards or backwards to focus, as the viewer likes through the surrounded lenses, whilst holding the unit by the folding handle beneath.
The Stereoscope is of a dark oak with some brass metalwork.
As a decorative piece it has a great look, almost like a mad mask.
The image cards are from USA and Britain and feature people, nature and even the full moon. Please zoom in for a read and closer look at the images.
To the tip of the viewer there is engraved a very specific ‘Patented June 20th 1874’. Which dates them pretty accurately to the late 19th century.
32cm X 13cm X 20cm tall. The image slides measure 17-18cm X 9-10cm.
