Antique dark brown leather 19th century portmanteau suitcase of high quality by James Northam of Exeter
An gorgeous Victorian dark brown very solid, large leather suitcase of high quality, made by James Northam of 70 Sidwell Street Exeter, ‘Manufacturers of portmanteaus, trunks, bags and every description of travelling equipage suitable for all climates…’. The company was established in 1836.
Several leather straps secure the case. The latches on vintage cases are most commonly steel or gold colour metal, but these are of a chunky strong solid brass.
The edges of the case are strengthened with timber. The lining is a classic blue and white stripe on linen. The portmanteau case is divided into two halves by a solid panel which has a red leather pocket and blue string which has come apart.
I have treated all 6 sides of leather with a good leather conditioning balsam, then a beeswax then a silicone-free leather silk to feed and nourish the leather, protect it and bring out the patina.
The case shows it’s decades with knocked and scrapes and tears but overall it holds itself together well and has plenty of storage space.
This case makes a fantastic display piece while simultaneously working as a storage trunk for almost anything you need but don’t need to see on a daily basis.
It has its antique original label still intact and in great condition.
The case measures 61cm X 37cm X 24cm and ships within the mainland UK only.
