Antique 1920s rare Mukudji female mask from Gabon

A rare female mask, sourced from a Gabonese anthropologist who curated the Gabon National Museum and has published a book on African masks.

The mask was made in the 1920s and was acquired by the national collection in 1958.

Used in coming of age ceremonies, this Mukudji mask was used by the Punu ethny (tribe) in Gabon, in the centre of the continent, on the west coast.

A beautiful figure with a distinct hairstyle, stylised ears, a lovely texture and patina from its age. It is unusually human for the genre and even more so a lesser seen female mask.

I have tied on a tan cord for mounting, but this is easily removed if preferred.

Measures 32cm tall X 21cm wide X 16cm deep.
