Early 1900s Yoruba tribe mask from Nigeria
A joyful looking wood-carved African mask, originating from the Yoruba ethny (tribe) of Nigeria.
The mask was made in the early decades of the last century, with Kaolin based white painted faces, extracted from the river beds.
This was originally used in an initiation ceremony, at the changing from one phase of life to the next.
With a bright and happy expression and colours, muted a little over the decades.
A beguiling, otherworldly piece benefiting from the texture and patina of its age.
I have attached a cord to the reverse for wall hanging. This can be untied if preferred and tired in a different way or removed.
