The back and legs are made of elm wood, and the seat an absolutely beautiful solid Ash, a hardwood with a glorious wide grain.
The ash seats on these chairs woukd have been made by specialists who just carved chair seats with a type of axe called an adze (great word for Scrabble), before being passed on to the carpenter who set it into the rest of the chair.
With a particularly high hooped back with the typical horizontal rail of Windsor chairs of this period, and elegantly turned baluster front legs.
A particularly special detail is the scroll carved into the arms at the inside ends.
This antique chair has had plenty of use, including damage to a spindle, a loose leg, pegs coming out of joints and a dryness overall to the timber. It has been fully, sensitively professionally restored and waxed to nourish and protect it for another century and a half of use.
This chair is fantastic in the lounge or a corner of a bedroom. Also nice to have in a larger kitchen, dining room or conservatory.
Measures 104cm tall X 57.5cm at widest to the outsides of the arms. The seat is 44cm in height at the front X 35cm width at the back of the seat. The overall depth is approx 56cm.
***Due to the size of the chair it will be sent by courier from Cardiff. You may also of course collect it, or arrange a courier yourself. Shipping by courier arranged by us is to be paid by the buyer directly to the courier on delivery. A price will be arranged by us in advance with a courier we have used many times and agreed with the buyer before confirmation. This cost will be very reasonable as the regular courier gets a lot of work from us.
