Midcentury 50 foot tape measure in leather case by Rabone Chesterman Ltd
A fine 50 foot tape measure by Rabone Chesterman made circa 1960s.
Rabone were a well renowned maker of tape measures with many patents for their designs which they presented around the world. They were founded in the late 18th century and like many old companies, changed their name over the decades. In 1963 J. Rabone & Sons merged with J. Chesterman Ltd. This measure is from that period.
It is pulled out by its steel hook and wound back in with a fold out brass winder.
The tape has a plastic feel, marked to the reverse as ‘Fibron’. It is single sided and measurements are in inches.
The tape and its leather case are both in unusually good condition. Having been leather polished shortly before photographing, some very fine fissures in the leather cases are highlighted, but they are now less pronounced.
A very elegant and useful item; an ideal gift for the avid sewer or lover of vintage decor.
The case measures 14cm in diameter.
