Welsh 19th century Ash and Elm rocking chair with carved frieze rail

A wonderful c. mid 19th century Welsh Ash and Elm wood tall spindle backed rocking chair.

Adding antique charm, history and sculptural beauty to your home, whilst also being a comfortable and useful piece of furniture.

***Shipping is not included, it is by collection or courier. Please read details at the bottom of this section***

The back and legs are made of Ash wood, and the seat an absolutely beautiful solid Elm, a hardwood with a glorious wide grain.

The Elm seats on these chairs would have been made by specialists who just carved chair seats with a type of axe called an adze (great word for Scrabble), before being passed on to the carpenter who set it into the rest of the chair.

With a particularly high and ergonomically scooped back with beautiful turned arm supports and baluster legs.

The back frieze rail is carved with symmetrical curvilinear sprays to the sides and a central floral roundel. There are wonderful details to be found all over this chair.

Of all the wonders of this antique piece, my favourite is probably the areas where nearly two centuries of occupants have worn down the finish to a reddish hue then in places down through to the wood, particularly where the head and hands rest, and the seat.

This chair is fantastic in the lounge or a corner of a bedroom. Also nice to have in a larger kitchen (rocking gently away while your partner cooks the dinner…) dining room, reading nook or conservatory.

Measures 103cm tall X 60cm at widest to the outsides of the arms. The seat is 40cm in height at the front and the overall depth of the chair including the legs is 73cm.

***Due to the size of the chair it will be sent by courier from Cardiff. You may also of course collect it, or arrange a courier yourself. Shipping by courier arranged by us is to be paid by the buyer directly to the courier on delivery. A price will be arranged by us in advance with a courier we have used many times and agreed with the buyer before confirmation. This cost will be very reasonable as the regular courier gets a lot of work from us. Buyer’s contact details will be passed to the courier with their permission in order to arrange a suitable delivery day and time.***
