Jaques of London regulation Croquet Set, early 1900s
A fantastic Regulation Croquet Set made by the most renowned maker, Jaques of London, in the first decade of the 1900s.
In their original stamped and brass badged wooden box, the set includes 4 mallets, the starting pin, 10 painted iron hoops and a mallet for hammering them into the lawn, 4 balls in the regulation colours of yellow, black, red and blue (plus a stray, smaller ball which can be kept as a spare). Lastly but certainly not least, The Laws of Croquet, a comprehensive instruction booklet ‘made and authorised by The Croquet Association issued by J. Jaques & Son Ltd of Hatton Gardens London and dated 1905.
Founded in 1795, John Jaques II is credited with initiating the craze for the sport in 1850s Victorian England.
Being the first outdoor sport which men and women could play together as equals, croquet has even been spoken of having enabled mixed socialising, which was not commonplace then. In the 1900 Paris Olympics it was the first sport to allow female competitors.
This high quality antique ‘Jaques Prize Medal Croquet’ set, incredibly well made and best in the business (can you imagine a game today being sold with large, heavy solid iron hoops?) remains therefore ready to use and not just for looking pretty.
Due to the size of the box and the weight of it and its contents, it will be sent by courier rather than posted. Of course collection from Cardiff is also very welcome.
Shipping by courier arranged by me is with a company I use on a weekly basis. The courier offers costed options with different time scales (usually within a week), levels of insurance and delivery time windows. The buyer chooses their preference and then I will send a link to payment taken via this website. Once payment is made I’ll book it in and you’ll receive email confirmation from the courier.
The box measures 114cm X 28cm deep X 25cm tall.
