Herbert Terry Anglepoise Model 1227 lamp, red 1950s original 2 step Anglepoise

An original Herbert Terry Anglepoise lamp two step model 1227 in vibrant red.

It has been completely rewired and grounded with black braided fabric cable, and a new brass bulb holder installed. It has then been PAT tested and bears the pass sticker on its plug (October 2023).

This is a model 1227 Anglepoise which were produced in Redditch, England between 1938-1968. This one dates from the 50s or possibly 60s.

A British design icon, the Anglepoise lamp was first invented in 1932 by automotive engineer George Carwardine who found that by placing a series of springs along its length, the lamp could be posed with the lightest of touches and stay in position.

This led to a unique shaped lamp which has been imitated world over for its qualities as a stylish task lamp.

Herbert Terry and sons spring makers produced the first lamps and continued to do so for the following decades.

The 1227 was the first Anglepoise model sold to the general public (beyond industry as task lamps). During the war they were marketed as the perfect lamps to avoid detection in air raids as they could be directed exactly where the light was required, away from the windows.

This lamp, in a bright red colour, has a safety switch on the bulb holder (which can only be switched when a bulb is present) on the back of the fluted shade, and has been checked over so that all the joints balance as intended.

There are several small scratches here and there, as should be expected with a vintage item such as this which would have seen regular use throughout its 60+ year history.

An identical black version of this light is also available – contact me for a deal on both.

Fully extended the lamp measures approximately 90cm / 3 feet tall. The shade is 16cm in length and the opening is 14cm in diameter. The base is 15cm².

I absolutely love this site. Last year I bought a dansette record player and recently bought a vintage butterfly table. The delivery was very quick and very well packed so no chance of breakages. Both items were exactly as described and as in the pictures. If you want anything vintage or a bit different this is the place to shop and every item comes with a personal note.I will be using this site for many years to come. Thank you Tim for giving me so much pleasure with my purchases. X

Lovely vintage biscuit barrel in great condition. Solid, clean, and handy for storing the little bits and pieces that usually clutter up my bedside table. A bargain at the price, and delivery was super quick.

Found a wonderful cabinet via Etsy and was signposted to the Oaky Doke Vintage Home website for the best price! Very impressed with the excellent customer service, attention to detail and care shown by Tim, who helped arrange a courier with a very reasonable price for me, coming all of the way to Scotland! Communication throughout excellent. Delighted with the quality of the cabinet, it's unusual aesthetic and multi-function use. Just perfect for helping solve the storage issues in our wee flat! A very happy customer and would highly recommend Tim's vintage business. I'll certainly be browsing the website in future for future finds. Thanks so much Tim!

Fantastic! The phone we purchased circa 1930s is the perfect addition to our recent home purchase that was built in the 30s! The home came with a place where phones like these would have been and it looks great! Tim, thanks for a wonderful purchasing experience and I’m sure I will be back to find my next vintage item!
