Five vintage sycamore wood butter pats
A wonderful set of five vintage wooden butter pats.
These likely date from the latter part of the 19th century to the early 20th.
With a beautifully use worn patina to the wood, these have been waxed with local beeswax polish and look fantastic lined up in a row with either side, or a mixture of the two on display.
These would’ve once been used to form blocks from mounds of butter, to portion it out into smaller, quantities by farmers. They would also be used by grocers to serve butter.
The grooves in the inner sides would allow excess buttermilk to drain out of the butter, while the smooth outer sides would form the smooth sides of the butter blocks.
They’ve also been known as Scotch hands, butter hands, or butter workers.
There are 3 of one size and 2 of another, so they look great in a row, either hung on nails (additional holes could be made in those without – message me if you’d like me to do this for you), or they’d also look good leant against a wall as pictured.
They measure 23-25cm X 7-8cm.
